Breeze of Greene

Course:

First Year Competition Brief

Year:

The focus of the project was on the lack of green space in the area. Although the site is a stones throw away from Hyde park the surroundings are incredibly commercial and built up. The absence of greenery in cities
is a wide scale problem which can be aided by by the redevelopment of buildings and repurposing of space. The addition of greenery on this project is largely superficial and is to be interacted with by the public. The building design resembles that of a ribcage/lungs an idea the group wanted to follow throughout the project. This design feature being implemented to reflect the purpose of vegetation in recycling carbon carbon emissions into oxygen. A simple but efficient way to improve air quality in an area which is already struggling with carbon emission levels. The concept of recycling is revisited with building materials. We look to reuse the rubble and materials from the demolished sections from the original structure to incorporate into the concrete features of ‘Breeze of Greene’. The high rise nature of Huguenot House allows for a view of central London which at this point is scarce. The project which acts as a vertical park focuses on openings and unrestricted views which is permitted through the use of mesh netting as a safety feature. This idea being developed from Buchner Bründler’s Garden Tower which allows for vertical vegetal growth whilst insuring safety as well as unobstructed openings. The ‘Breeze of Greene’ is above all an enjoyable outdoor space positioned in the borough of Westminster which ranks one of the last amongst the boroughs in London for air cleanliness and greenery.
